To celebrate this event, Blackpool Corporation covered five trams with electric lights and slogans of goodwill to Her Majesty, and toured them up and down the Promenade.
What do a future Duke Of Kent (Alderman Ashton), Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield, Cannon & Ball, Dale Winton, the casts of “Dad’s Army” and “Coronation Street,” Rochdale Songstress Lisa Stansfield and the fourth and tenth incarnations of Doctor Who all have in common?Īs you’ve probably guessed from the title of the blog, they’ve all switched on the Blackpool Iluminations, that great display of lights and tableaux that stretch for seven miles (from Starr Gate-Bispham) along Blackpool’s Promenade, beginning on the Friday evening (when the celebraties such as those mentioned come to switch on the lights) after August Bank Holiday Weekend and running until the first weekend in November, usefully extending Blackpool’s summer season for an extra two months!Īlthough forever now associated with the autumn, the Illumination tradition can actually be traced back to the evening of June 22nd 1897, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
